This year's team features four Black students!

My name is Will Bland, and I rock #4! As a junior hailing from Virginia Beach, Virginia, I am a Current Brother of Chocolate City, Burchard Scholar, Cohort 7 Member of The Standard, and Spring 2025 initiate of the Rho Nu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As a double major in Finance and Urban Planning, my service and professional interests largely relate to social justice and equity around Housing, Education, Health, and EcoDev. Thus, I aspire to attend Law School following my graduation from the Institute. Most recently, I spent the summer at UCL in London working as a researcher in developmental finance and economics for the Lancet! After missing last year with an injury, I'm looking forward to getting back to hooping!

My name is Michael Ewing, and I am a 3rd year student at MIT studying mechanical engineering with a concentration in artificial intelligence and minoring in both business and African Diaspora studies. I am a varsity basketball player (#15) and BSU alumni relations chair. I am particularly passionate about design and open-ended problem solving. I have worked in a variety of areas, including health and wellness technology, sports data analytics, ocean engineering and others. I am passionate about entrepreneurship and starting ventures that have a positive impact on the world. Going forward I want to continue to explore opportunities in design as well as continue to develop my own entrepreneurial ventures which currently pertain to blending AI and health technology to tackle issues in well-being and women’s health.

My name is Henry Marshall, current first-year student from Chicago, Illinois attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. I am tentatively pursuing Mechanical Engineering as my major and African Diaspora Studies as a minor. I am also a varsity basketball player (Jersey Number 13), member of the Chocolate City living group, and new inductee into The Standard’s Cohort 9.

My name is Yusuf Young, I am a third-year student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. I conduct research at the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies, where I work on polymer-dispersed liquid crystal elastomers (PD-LCEs) and other shape-memory materials. As part of this work, I am developing a general coupled-physics model to simulate and predict the thermomechanical behavior of these materials. Outside the lab, I play varsity basketball for MIT. In the future, I hope to pursue a career in computer hardware, developing technologies that push the boundaries of performance and efficiency.
